Some people have habits so annoying they make you want to tear your ear lobes off.

One of my mates falls into that category. Let’s call him Gerry. He’s one of my best pals and I love him to bits (don’t ever tell him that, though), and he’s had one super annoying habit for as long as I’ve known him.

He disagrees with everything.

Tell him the sky’s blue and he’ll say it’s lilac. Tell him a movie with a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is terrible and he’ll say it’s a masterpiece.

9 times out of 10, he’ll choose the opposite of the general consensus.

Sometimes he’s right (don’t ever tell him that, either). Sometimes he’s wrong. Either way, he’s always on the other end of the seesaw from everyone else.

When we were kids, this really messed with my head. That’s probably one of the reasons why he kept doing it, naturally. What’re friends for if they don’t spend most of their time trying to drive you insane?

And now, as an adult, guess what? His habit still drives me nuts. But not like before.

Because now, I’m coming around to Gerry’s way of thinking. Now, in my mid-thirties, I can see the mildly-maddening logic in going against the flow. And it all stems from social media.
