The Right (and Wrong) Ways to Engage with Big Accounts on Social Media to Grow Your Platform
You’ll have heard the why. Here’s the how.
“Engage with big accounts.”
I’m sure you’ve read this advice plenty of times on social media. It seems to be everyone’s go-to strategy for gaining more followers and growing their audience.
Well, that’s probably the case because it’s not wrong.
Seeking visibility
For the longest time, I felt like I was invisible on social media.
I wrote posts on Twitter (now X), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and even made a few videos on TikTok (don’t judge me). I thought my content wasn’t half bad. Sometimes, it even threatened to be good.
But the response was often a cricket caught in a tumbleweed blown by a silent fart in the wind.
Little or no response.
That’s a pretty disheartening thing, especially when you’re actively trying to build something that’ll one day become your personal platform.
And it would’ve gone on being a big ol’ perpetual enthusiasm-suck if I hadn’t switched up my approach.
I read the advice from others. I listened to it. I took it on board.
And once I started engaging with accounts bigger than my own (coupled with a few extra strategies of my own), that’s when my following began to grow.
As of today, I have something like 25k followers across my socials. It’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but it’s certainly the beginnings of a decent personal platform.
Engaging with bigger accounts was (and is) a major part of my overall approach.
So, enough of the why — what about the how?
