I started a podcast this summer.

I’ve already spoken to a few fantastic guests. My eyes get opened just a little bit more during each of those conversations.

My most recent interview was with

Philip Hofmacher
. He’s part of the team behind
Write • Build • Scale
.

We chatted about a host of different topics, but our conversation kept circling back to solopreneurship, and where we saw it going in the next few years.

In the course of this chat, Philip said something that really stuck out to me (well, he said a lot of things that stuck out, but this I’ll zero in on this one for now):

To paraphrase: “People should try being entrepreneurs first before getting a 9-5 job.”

Phil clarified, of course, that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a 9-5 role. But he suggested that instead of pursuing that route first for several years and then switching to entrepreneurship, folks in our generation should do it the other way round.

Try building a business first. Then go 9-5.

It was an intriguing idea, and not the first time I’d heard it.

What if we spent time expanding our skillset, gaining confidence, becoming well-rounded business-people… and then pursued a more “traditional” role?

Solopreneurship first. 9-5 second.

I liked that idea, specifically because most people seem to do it the other way around.

And what’s at the core of it all?

If you want to change, you can.

It’s completely possible to switch lanes at any time.
