As a solopreneur, there’s a razor-thin line between self-promotion and outright bragging.
If you’re pitching a product or service (or even your paid tier on Substack), you need to be willing and able to talk about it in a way that gets readers’ heads nodding along.
Consumers spend money based, at least in part, on how easily they can understand the return on their investment.
A solopreneur can make his or herself into a safe bet for consumers by being incredibly clear about their credentials. The better your credentials are, the less friction there’ll be for clients or customers who’re considering hiring you or buying your product.
So you’ve got to get comfortable with sharing your wins, highlighting your strengths, and generally bigging yourself up in the right way.
That’s where the fine line comes in.
Sharing a major milestone every so often is fine. Sharing constant wins on a near-daily basis is not.
Yes, you’re reminding readers about your credibility, but if you don’t share what’s behind all those wins in a real, honest way, it’ll just come off as bragging. And constant bragging gets wearisome pretty fast.
Equally, if you never tell readers why you’re worth listening to, they won’t. You’ll simply fade into the shadow of someone else’s big achievement.
The faster you learn how to promote yourself in a way that helps readers understand why you’re worth paying attention to, without slipping over the line into outright bragging, the faster you’ll earn their trust.
And as a solopreneur, a trusting audience will be one of the greatest assets in your arsenal.
